Tonino Delli Colli

Leone’s mastery of the widescreen space, and of the odd things that happen to color and light now and then, particularly under the influence of dust, developed from his association with Delli Colli. Delli Colli is a master cinematographer who shot the best films of several Italian directors—including Wertmüller and Pasolini—did exquisite work for Fellini, and subsequently went international, doing especially evocative work for Polanski and Roberto Benigni’s La Vita è bella. He attended, among other things, Leone’s perfection of the impossibly close closeup, his development of circular movement, his relentless point-of-view track-ins, and such wildly experimental stuff as the dizzying swish-pans and tracks of Tuco’s race through the graveyard and the ninety-degree roll and zoom-out on Frank and Jill’s tryst. Once Upon a Time in America showed him equally capable of bringing the Leone look to urban colors and steam as to western landscapes and dust. With Baragli, Morricone, Simi, and Vincenzoni, Tonino Delli Colli fills out Leone’s royal flush.
